Stem cell hierarchy in the normal breast and breast cancer

The first primary research goal is to understand the hierarchical relationship between cells in the breast epithelium in order to elucidate in which cells cancer is initiated in breast tissue.

The focus is on understanding how stem and early progenitor cells are regulated, as they are likely to be the first players in cancer initiation. Similar hierarchical relationships have also been discovered by these PIs in pre-invasive and invasive breast cancers and the second primary research goal is to define novel approaches to target such small populations of treatment resistant cancer stem cells to improve on breast cancer therapies.
