Tissue micro-mechanics

The development of new experimental methodologies to quantify bio-mechanical properties at microscopic length scales is essential to understanding the link between molecular structure and whole-tissue mechanics. Such methodologies would make major contributions to our knowledge of age-related pathologies of elastic tissues, such as the lungs, vasculature, cartilage and skin.

This collaboration with Centre for Dermatology and the School of Materials aims to develop new approaches to quantifying the micro-mechanical properties of biological samples.

Research areas

There are two main research areas:

  1. Nano-indentation of cryo-preserved tissues
  2. Scanning acoustic microscopy of cryo-preserved tissues
