Healthy human tissues such as the lungs, blood vessels, heart and cartilage rely on specialized proteins to maintain strength and elasticity. Changes in these mechanical properties have a major impact on human life-expectancy and well-being. The molecular mechanics programme focuses on the link between the mechanical properties of protein molecules and the altered mechanical properties of ageing and diseased tissues.
