Pathogenesis of IVD degeneration

This area of research aims to increase our knowledge and understanding of normal IVD development (as a model for regeneration) and homeostasis (as a benchmark for regeneration), as well as the patho-physiological pathways and stages that define the degenerate IVD.

Research areas

Current areas of interest are:

  1. Identification of disc cell phenotype 
  2. IVD cell metabolism and homeostasis 
  3. Effect of mechanical load on cell function 
  4. Mechanical properties of load-bearing tissues and structures 
  5. Catabolic events that lead to IVD degeneration (e.g. the role of IL-1, matrix metalloproteinases and ADAMTs) 
  6. Cell Senescence
