2nd Annual Methods for the Economic Evaluation of Diagnostics (MEED) Research Forum

Date: 12 September 2019 (10:00 – 17:00)

Location: The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK

Overview

The Manchester Centre for Health Economics, The University of Manchester, is delighted to host the second annual MEED Research Forum. This one-day event aims to facilitate the development of methods for economic evaluations (and related studies) of diagnostics by bringing together health economists actively involved in this research area.

Details

Tests that are used for diagnosis, monitoring, screening, and prediction of outcomes are playing an increasingly important role in modern health care. The importance of tests in clinical practice is reflected by the increasing evaluation of these health technologies by major Health Technology Assessment (HTA) agencies. The appropriate adoption of tests into health care systems requires robust evidence of their analytical validity, clinical accuracy, clinical utility, and relative cost-effectiveness. The development and assessment of this evidence, however, has historically failed to achieve the same level of rigour expected from pharmaceutical interventions. Therefore, there is a substantial need for improved methodology in the health economics of diagnostics which has received relatively little attention compared with, for example, study/trial design and statistical methods.

The MEED Research Forum will bring together health economists working in test development and evaluation to showcase novel methods and ongoing research, network with researchers working in similar areas, and reflect on key priorities for future work.

Abstract Submission

Delegates are invited to submit abstracts (work-in-progress or completed research) to the 2019 MEED Research Forum. Please submit your abstract as an email attachment to MEED@manchester.ac.uk. You will receive an email to confirm receipt of your abstract submission.

Submissions that use any method related to the economics of diagnostics and tests are encouraged. This may include (but is not limited to):

  • Development and/or application of a novel economic evaluation method;

  • Application of conventional cost-effectiveness analysis methods to a challenging case study of a diagnostic test;

  • Evaluation of regional or national policies with respect to diagnostics.

Abstracts should be approximately 300 words and include Introduction, Method, Results/Interim Results, Conclusion sections. Please also include the abstract title, list of authors and institutions, and the presenting author’s contact details. There is no limit on the number of abstracts that any one author may submit.

Successful abstracts will be selected for either a long or short oral presentation. Long presentations will consist of a 25 minute author presentation followed by a 20 minute audience discussion. Short presentations will consist of a “lightning round” session in which the authors will present their work in 10 minutes with 5 minutes for discussion.

Abstract submission closing date: 22 July 2019
