Photodermatoses are a wide range of skin disorders of immune, genetic and biochemical aetiology, caused by abnormal sensitivity to ultraviolet and/or visible radiation.
The Photobiology Unit, provides a multidisciplinary investigation service for patients residing in a wide area of northern and central England and Wales. Together with internal and external collaborators, investigations are ongoing to elucidate underlying mechanisms.
The group is active in exploring:
- Epidemiological aspects of the photosensitivity disorders
- Impact on quality of life and psychological welfare of sufferers
- Underlying mechanisms
- Photoprotective treatments, including an alpha-MSH analogue
