Sunburn is a self-limiting acute inflammatory response to ultraviolet radiation. Lesley Rhodes has developed reproducible models for production and quantification of the sunburn response in human skin, including:
- Direct sampling of mediators involved through the techniques of skin suction blistering and microdialysis
- Assessment of roles of mediators through application of inhibitors including through microdialysis
- Short term tissue damage models in humans that reflect longer term damage.
A particular focus is identification of the involvement of eicosanoids in acute and longer term adverse skin effects, and of the respective role of epidermal and dermal cells.
