The astounding, life-long regenerative capacity of the hair follicle is based on its endowment with several different stem cell populations. The group has developed techniques to isolate, GFP-label (via keratin 15 promoter), culture and experimentally manipulate epithelial or nestin+ progenitor cells from human scalp hair follicles in vitro, or to study them in their natural tissue context in full-thickness, serum-free long-term organ culture.

It also attempts to better define the contribution of human hair follicle-associated mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells to wound healing (granulation tissue formation) and its disorders (chronic ulcers, hypertrophic scars, keloids), and to explore these stem/progenitor cells as cell pool for regenerative medicine strategies on the basis of autologous cell-based therapy.
